Welcome to the website for the Emmanuel College Music Society.
Founded in 1867, the Emmanuel College Music Society is one of the oldest and largest societies in the College. ECMS aims to provide an exciting variety of musical opportunities, exploring styles ranging from C13th folk songs, through masterworks of the Western classical canon, to contemporary idioms, including jazz and show pieces. Each year, we host 21 chamber music recitals, three end-of-term concerts (featuring our Chorus, Orchestra and Big Band), an annual Jazz and Cocktails night, an annual ECMS Dinner, a series of workshops, and other musical and social events.
In recent years, over 100 musicians participated in ECMS concerts: most were students at Emmanuel, but about a third were members of other Cambridge Colleges. All members of Emmanuel College, whatever your level of musical experience may be, are very welcome to join our ensembles. Performing music is a great way to explore different cultures and periods of history, as well as meeting new friends. There are also opportunities to conduct or lead ensembles.
Please explore this site, or contact the President or Secretary for more information. Along with an overview of the Music Society's activities, this site provides information about how to book practice rooms, gain access to the College's instruments, find a teacher, and apply for funding for lessons within College. There is also some information about the Music Tripos here for prospective music students.
Here are some links to other musical events and organisations in Cambridge: the Cambridge University Music Society (CUMS), Cambridge University's Faculty of Music, the Cambridge Concert Calendar, and the University's Instrumental Award Scheme in Chamber Music. If you are interested in applying to the College as an Organ Scholar, you are very welcome to contact the Senior Organ Scholar, and more information on the Cambridge Organ Scholarships is available here.
